I’ve just had a thread lift, doctor. Could you please guide me on how to properly care for my skin at home after the procedure?

I am Dr. Le Ngoc Tuan Anh, Head of the Thread Lift Department at Gangwhoo Cosmetic Hospital. With over 15 years of experience in aesthetic surgery, I’ve found that one of the key factors determining the effectiveness and longevity of a thread lift is proper post-procedure care.

There have been many cases where clients underwent technically correct procedures, but due to improper aftercare, their results were compromised or even led to avoidable complications. This article provides medically accurate and practical post-thread lift care guidelines.

Common symptoms after a thread lift

After the procedure, clients may experience some normal physiological reactions:

  • Mild swelling and bruising at the thread insertion sites.
  • A feeling of tightness or slight tenderness under the skin during the first few days.
  • Temporary facial asymmetry due to uneven swelling.

These symptoms are common and typically improve within 5–7 days with proper care.

Post-thread lift care instructions

After completing the procedure, proper post-thread lift care plays a decisive role in recovery time and the longevity of results. Below are specific guidelines:

1. Apply cold compresses to reduce swelling and bruising

Within the first 48 hours, gently apply cold compresses to the treated areas to minimize swelling, reduce bruising, and help maintain facial contour. When doing this:

  • Use an ice pack or wrap ice cubes in a clean cloth.
  • Apply for 10–15 minutes at a time, several times a day.
  • Never place ice directly on the skin to avoid frostbite.

2. Avoid physical impact on treated areas

An important rule in post-thread lift care is to avoid any strong mechanical effects:

  • Do not touch, scratch, or massage the treated skin.
  • Limit wide mouth opening, chewing hard foods, or excessive laughing for the first 1–2 weeks.
  • Avoid strenuous sports activities, especially those involving facial movement.

3. Cleanse your face properly

Cleansing is essential but must be done very gently:

  • Do not wash your face with water during the first 24 hours.
  • From the second day onward, you may use saline solution or a mild facial cleanser.
  • Pat dry with a soft towel, avoid rubbing.
  • Avoid skincare products containing alcohol, acids, retinol, or exfoliating ingredients.

4. Limit cosmetics and irritation factors

Another key reminder for post-thread lift care is to avoid makeup and heat exposure:

  • Do not apply makeup for at least 5–7 days after the procedure.
  • Avoid steaming, hot baths, or direct sunlight.
  • Avoid creams or lotions with strong exfoliating or irritating effects.

Sleeping posture and rest after a thread lift

A factor often overlooked but extremely important in post-thread lift care is sleeping posture. Maintaining the correct posture helps reduce swelling and prevents thread displacement or facial contour distortion.

1. Sleep on your back with your head elevated

During the first 5–7 days, maintain a supine position with your head elevated 30–45 degrees above heart level.

  • You can use two pillows or a U-shaped neck pillow for support.
  • This helps promote circulation, reduce fluid retention, and minimize swelling.

2. Avoid sleeping on your side or stomach

Sleeping on your side or face down may create pressure on the treated areas.

  • This can cause thread displacement, facial asymmetry, or unnatural contours.
  • If it’s difficult to change your sleeping habits, use pillows on both sides to keep your head in place.

3. Limit facial movements while sleeping

Avoid clenching your teeth, biting your lips, or any habits that create pressure on the face during sleep.
For clients who snore loudly or grind their teeth, the doctor may recommend supportive measures, as excessive movement can affect thread stabilization.

4. How long should you maintain a safe sleeping posture?

For at least the first 10–14 days, maintain the correct sleeping posture.
After this period, when soft tissues begin to stabilize around the threads, you may gradually return to your normal sleeping habits—but continue to sleep on your back for the first month to preserve the best results.

Diet and food restrictions after a thread lift

In aesthetic medicine, diet is considered an important factor that helps shorten recovery time, reduce inflammation, and maintain stable aesthetic results. Therefore, when building a post-thread lift care routine, clients should pay close attention to their daily nutrition.

1. Foods to avoid

To prevent inflammation, poor scarring, or delayed healing, you should limit:

  • Chicken, beef, and seafood: high in hard-to-digest proteins that may trigger inflammation at wound sites and increase the risk of keloid scars.
  • Water spinach and glutinous foods: promote fibroblast overgrowth, leading to hypertrophic or keloid scarring.
  • Spicy, oily, or fried foods: cause vasodilation and slow wound healing.
  • Alcohol, tobacco, and stimulants: inhibit tissue regeneration, delay skin healing, and increase infection risk.

2. Foods to include

To accelerate recovery and improve skin health, increase intake of:

  • Healthy proteins: found in lean pork, salmon, eggs, and Greek yogurt — essential for tissue regeneration and collagen reinforcement around the threads.
  • Vitamins C and E: boost collagen synthesis, strengthen immunity, and reduce swelling — abundant in oranges, grapefruit, kiwi, bell peppers, and almonds.
  • Zinc and selenium: vital for wound healing — found in pumpkin seeds, well-cooked seafood, and whole grains.
  • Leafy vegetables, fiber, and water: promote detoxification and prevent constipation, which can indirectly strain facial muscles.

3. Duration of dietary restrictions

  • First 2 weeks: strictly follow the recommended diet to stabilize healing.
  • From week 3 onward: gradually return to a normal diet but continue to limit alcohol, tobacco, and spicy foods for at least 1 month to ensure lasting results.

Monitoring and managing abnormal symptoms after a thread lift

  • Take all prescribed medications as directed by your doctor.
  • Do not self-medicate or use unapproved painkillers or anti-inflammatory drugs.
  • Avoid NSAIDs (aspirin, ibuprofen) within the first 5 days, as they may increase bleeding risk.

If you notice any of the following symptoms:

  • Increasing redness or swelling.
  • Persistent, severe pain.
  • Pus discharge or fever.
  • Exposed threads under the skin or hard nodules.
Contact your doctor immediately for timely management.

Follow-up appointments

Clients should attend all scheduled follow-ups so the doctor can assess healing progress and adjust care if necessary. This is crucial for maintaining stable and safe thread lift results.

Proper post-thread lift care not only shortens recovery time but also directly affects the final aesthetic outcome. I always advise clients to strictly follow medical guidance, maintain a proper diet, and attend follow-ups as scheduled.
At Gangwhoo Cosmetic Hospital, we are committed to accompanying clients through every stage — from consultation and procedure to aftercare. If you need personalized examination and care planning, please contact us for support from our team of experienced specialists.
