Doctor, my name is Bích Ngọc. It has been nearly 2 weeks since my double eyelid surgery. Everything seemed fine, but recently I have noticed that the incision appears redder than usual, especially in the after waking up. I am worried whether this could be inflammation or any complication. Doctor, is redness at the double eyelid incision dangerous, and what should I do to reduce swelling and redness as quickly as possible?

Hello, after double eyelid surgery, many people feel concerned when they notice redness at the double eyelid incision, especially during the first few days. This is a fairly common condition and is not always an abnormal sign. However, to clearly understand the causes, level of impact, and safe management methods, the doctor will explain in detail to help you feel more reassured.

Causes of Redness at the Double Eyelid Incision

Redness at the double eyelid incision usually results from causes related to the body’s natural healing response or improper postoperative care.

First, the doctor confirms that mild redness around the eyelid area after double eyelid surgery is completely normal. This is the stage when the skin is regenerating new tissue and the subdermal blood vessels are actively supplying nutrients to the injured area. As blood flow increases, the eyelid may appear red or light pink, typically lasting about 5–10 days initially.

In addition to the physiological cause above, redness at the double eyelid incision may also result from:

  • Mild postoperative inflammatory response: When the body mounts an immune response to the wound, inflammatory cells concentrate in the eyelid area, causing mild redness.
  • Improper care: Touching the eyelid area with hands, failing to clean the wound as instructed, or allowing dirt or cosmetics to contact the incision may make the redness more pronounced.
  • Allergic reaction to medication or sutures: Some individuals with sensitive constitutions may react to antibiotics, antiseptic solutions, or suture materials, leading to prolonged redness and swelling.
  • Mechanical impact: Rubbing the eyelid during sleep, frequently bending the head down, or prolonged phone use increases blood circulation to the eye area, making the eyelids appear redder.

If after 7–10 days the redness gradually decreases and is not accompanied by swelling, pain, or discharge, it is considered a normal response. However, if the double eyelid incision redness is accompanied by pain, swelling, pus formation, or yellow crusting, you should return for an early follow-up examination so the doctor can promptly assess and manage the condition.

Does Redness at the Double Eyelid Incision Cause Any Problems?

In most cases, redness at the double eyelid incision does not affect the aesthetic outcome if properly cared for. It is a manifestation of the healing process, with skin regeneration and healthy blood circulation.

However, in some cases, redness persisting beyond 2 weeks, accompanied by a burning sensation, pain, or yellow discharge, may indicate infection or soft tissue irritation around the eyelid area. If not treated promptly, it may lead to:

  • Post-inflammatory hyperpigmented or hypertrophic scars: Prolonged inflammation may cause excessive collagen production, making the scar more prominent along the eyelid crease.
  • Soft tissue infection: In more severe cases, it may cause periorbital cellulitis, potentially affecting vision.
  • Aesthetic impact: Eyelid asymmetry, uneven crease lines, or loss of natural appearance if the healing process is not well controlled.

Therefore, if after 7–10 days the double eyelid incision remains intensely red or spreads, you should visit a specialized medical facility immediately for evaluation of the exact cause. Do not self-medicate or apply folk remedies, as these may worsen infection.

How to Manage Redness at the Double Eyelid Incision

To help the eyelid area recover quickly and effectively reduce redness, the doctor recommends strictly following postoperative care instructions as below:

Lưu nháp tự động

  • Keep the incision clean: Gently cleanse with the antiseptic solution prescribed by your doctor. Absolutely avoid rubbing or allowing contaminated water to contact the eyelid area.
  • Apply cold compresses during the first 2–3 days: This helps constrict blood vessels, reduce swelling, redness, and pain. Afterward, you may switch to gentle warm compresses to promote blood circulation.
  • Avoid touching the eyelid area with your hands: Hands may carry bacteria that cause infection. When cleaning is necessary, use a sterile cotton swab soaked in the prescribed solution.
  • Limit staying up late, prolonged phone use, or watching TV for extended periods: These activities strain the eyes and increase blood circulation, making redness fade more slowly.
  • Avoid using eye-area cosmetics before complete healing: Skincare products, makeup, or makeup removers may cause irritation and worsen redness.
  • Supplement vitamin C and E and drink adequate water: This supports skin regeneration and reduces the risk of postoperative hyperpigmentation or scarring.
