Doctor, could you tell me how long, on average, patients need to wear a compression garment after a facelift, and how many weeks it takes for the face to stabilize?
I am Dr. Le Ngoc Tuan Anh – Head of the Facelift Department at Gangwhoo Cosmetic Hospital. During consultations and treatment, one of the questions I frequently hear from patients after facelift surgery is: “Doctor, how long do I need to wear a compression garment after a facelift before my results stabilize?”
Wearing a compression garment (also called a compression bandage, head wrap, or compression garment) is an important step in postoperative care. It not only helps the face recover more quickly but also affects whether the results remain lasting and balanced. In this article, I will explain in detail how long to wear a compression garment after a facelift, why it is necessary, and how to use it according to medical standards.
Why Is a Compression Garment Needed After a Facelift?
Many patients wonder why they need to wear a garment when they think surgery alone should be enough. In fact, a compression garment acts like a “supporting doctor” during recovery:
Wearing a compression garment after a facelift helps keep the face in the desired shape and promotes faster healing
Stabilizes facial skin and tissue: helps the skin adhere closely to the underlying tissue and prevents displacement.
Reduces swelling and limits fluid accumulation and bruising: applies gentle compression to prevent fluid from collecting beneath the skin.
Speeds up recovery: helps wounds heal more quickly and steadily.
Helps ensure balanced aesthetic results: maintains the facial contour according to the original treatment plan.
How Long Should You Wear a Compression Garment After a Facelift?
Based on my professional experience and international medical guidelines, the compression-garment period can be divided into the following stages:
1. Initial stage (days 1–3 after surgery)
Wear the compression garment continuously, including while sleeping, during the first few days after surgery
Patients need to wear the garment continuously, 24/7, including while sleeping.
Remove it only for personal hygiene or as instructed by the doctor.
Purpose: to control swelling, reduce bruising, and keep the tissue stable during this sensitive stage.
2. Recovery stage (weeks 1–2)
Fourteen days after a facelift, the skin looks rejuvenated, smooth, and youthful, as if surgery had never been performed
Continue to wear the garment for most of the day, except while eating or attending to personal hygiene.
During this stage, the soft tissues begin to adhere firmly, but they can still be affected if they are not properly supported.
3. Maintenance stage (weeks 2–3)
Patients may only need to wear it at night and while at home.
During the day, the garment may be removed for social activities or work, but strenuous facial movements should be limited.
4. Typical duration in Vietnam
The most common duration I prescribe for patients at Gangwhoo Cosmetic Hospital is approximately 15 consecutive days.
Some special cases (slow recovery, weak soft tissue, or complex surgery) may require a longer period, depending on the doctor’s assessment.
Factors Affecting How Long You Need to Wear a Compression Garment After a Facelift
Not all patients need to wear a compression garment for the same length of time. The duration depends on:
Facelift method: Thread lifting usually involves a faster recovery than SMAS or Deep Plane facelift surgery. facelift
Extent of intervention: Less invasive procedures require a shorter period of garment use than comprehensive surgery.
Individual constitution and recovery rate: Younger people in good health generally recover more quickly.
Following instructions: Patients who follow postoperative care instructions properly may reduce the amount of time they need to wear the garment.
How to Wear a Facelift Compression Garment Correctly
Endoscopic 4K SMAS facelift helps combat signs of aging and restore a youthful appearance with greater confidence
Make sure it fits properly; do not fasten it too tightly: excessive pressure can compress blood vessels, causing numbness, pain, or skin discoloration.
Keep it clean: wash the garment regularly and allow it to dry completely before using it again.
Monitor the skin: if unusual signs occur, such as redness or persistent pain, contact your doctor immediately.
Combine it with postoperative care: get enough rest, eat a balanced diet, avoid foods believed to contribute to inflammation or scarring (chicken, beef, seafood, sticky rice, and water spinach), and supplement your diet with vitamin C, vitamin E, and healthy protein.
Professional Advice
Wearing a compression garment should not be skipped, as it affects the durability and aesthetic quality of facelift results.
The average wearing period is 2–3 weeks, with the first 15 days being especially important.
Always follow the individualized instructions of your treating doctor, because each patient has a different constitution and condition.
How long should you wear a compression garment after a facelift? is a very important question during postoperative recovery. On average, patients need to wear it continuously during the first 1–2 weeks and then continue wearing it at night for another week. Following the instructions correctly helps the face recover faster, reduces the risk of complications, and supports natural, long-lasting rejuvenation results.
