Hello Doctor, during my examination, I was advised to undergo bone grafting before implant placement because my jawbone has resorbed. I would like to ask whether bone grafting before dental implant placement is expensive, in which cases bone grafting is mandatory, and after bone grafting, how long do I need to wait before the implant can be placed?

Hello, regarding your concern about whether bone grafting for implant placement is expensive and when bone grafting is necessary before dental implant placement, the doctor will explain from a professional perspective so that you can clearly understand the nature of the treatment and the associated costs.

What Is Bone Grafting Before Implant Placement?

From a professional perspective, bone grafting before implant placement is a procedure to restore the volume and density of the jawbone in an area where bone resorption has occurred, creating a stable foundation for placing the implant according to biological principles. Simply put, if the bone does not have sufficient height or thickness, the implant will not have a stable supporting foundation and the risk of implant failure increases. Therefore, the doctor needs to augment the bone before or simultaneously with implant placement.

Bone grafting materials may include autogenous bone, artificial bone, or sterile processed biomaterial bone. After grafting, the body gradually regenerates and integrates the new bone tissue, helping the implant site achieve sufficient density to withstand long-term chewing forces. This is a foundational treatment step that directly affects the longevity of the implant, rather than merely being an additional procedure.

Is Bone Grafting for Implant Placement Expensive?

In reality, the question of whether bone grafting for implant placement is expensive depends on the extent of bone loss and the type of grafting material used. If only a minor amount of bone augmentation is needed to increase bone thickness, the cost is usually moderate; however, in cases of significant bone loss that require sinus lifting or grafting a large volume of bone, the cost will be higher due to the longer surgical time, materials, and more complex monitoring process.

However, in implant treatment, the cost of bone grafting should not be viewed as an “additional expense,” but rather as an investment to ensure stable implant integration and avoid placing an implant in a weak bone foundation, which could lead to implant mobility or early failure. At facilities equipped with 3D diagnostic imaging systems and standardized sterile procedures, the doctor will prescribe the appropriate amount of bone grafting needed to optimize costs while still ensuring biological safety.

When Is Bone Grafting Necessary Before Dental Implant Placement?

The indication for bone grafting is made after the doctor conducts a clinical examination and performs a Cone Beam CT scan to accurately measure the bone volume. Common situations include:

Long-Term Tooth Loss Causing Bone Resorption

When a tooth has been missing for a long time, the alveolar bone no longer bears chewing forces and will gradually resorb physiologically. In this situation, if an implant is placed immediately, the implant may have insufficient bone support and may be unable to achieve adequate primary stability. Therefore, bone grafting is necessary to reconstruct the supporting foundation.

Thin Jawbone or Insufficient Bone Height

Some patients have a congenitally thin bone structure, or the posterior region of the upper jaw may be close to the maxillary sinus. In these cases, bone grafting or sinus lifting helps increase bone height, creating a safe space for placing the implant in the correct anatomical position.

Periodontal Disease or Bone Damage

A history of severe periodontitis, infection around the tooth, or jaw trauma can cause loss of part of the supporting bone tissue. Bone grafting helps restore the lost structure and reduce the risk of peri-implant inflammation later.

Does Bone Grafting Prolong the Time Required for Dental Implant Placement?

Yes, but this additional time is biologically necessary. After grafting, the body needs time to form new blood vessels and integrate the grafting material into new bone tissue. Depending on the extent of the grafting procedure, the waiting period may be shorter or longer before implant placement or before the final porcelain crown is attached.

In clinical practice, the doctor will consider either bone grafting first followed by implant placement, or performing bone grafting simultaneously with implant placement if the bone conditions allow, in order to shorten the overall treatment time while still ensuring a high integration rate. Adhering to follow-up appointments and proper postoperative care helps the healing process proceed more stably.

If you have been advised to undergo bone grafting but are still uncertain about its necessity or the cost, the doctor recommends that you undergo a CT scan and have your bone density evaluated directly at Gangwhoo Cosmetic Hospital to receive a personalized treatment plan and avoid either insufficient or excessive treatment.

After completing implant restoration, you can also combine dental aesthetic care services such as teeth whitening at the hospital to harmonize the color, helping your smile look more balanced and natural.
