I really love eel, but I’m not sure if I can eat it after getting rhinoplasty. Does eating eel easily cause scarring or irritation to the fresh wound, doctor? I hope you can explain this for me.

Hello, I understand that after undergoing rhinoplasty, dietary restrictions often make many people wonder what they should or shouldn’t eat to help the nose heal quickly and achieve the best results. One of the most common questions is “Can you eat eel after rhinoplasty?” — since eel is nutritious but many people feel hesitant because of its strong smell. I will explain everything clearly below so you can feel more reassured during your post–rhinoplasty care.

Can you eat eel after rhinoplasty?

Regarding the question “Can you eat eel after rhinoplasty?”, the answer is yes — as long as you consume it properly and ensure food hygiene. Eel meat is rich in protein, iron, vitamins A, B1, B12, and various minerals beneficial for tissue healing after surgery. These nutrients help boost blood production, support wound healing, and reduce inflammation effectively.

However, what matters is that eel must be thoroughly processed and fully cooked to eliminate parasites, especially gnathostoma — a parasite that can be harmful to people with weakened immunity after surgery. Additionally, you should avoid raw-marinated eel, lightly cooked eel, or fermented eel. If hygienic principles are followed, eel is a very good food during the postoperative period.

Boosts blood production:

Eel contains a high amount of iron, which helps increase red blood cell production and improve anemia — a common issue after surgery. Having sufficient blood allows better oxygen and nutrient delivery to the wound, helping the nose heal faster and more naturally.

Speeds up wound recovery:

The protein in eel provides essential building blocks for regenerating skin and cartilage tissues after rhinoplasty. Proper consumption of eel helps the surgical site close more quickly, reduces swelling, and limits infection risks.

Enhances immunity:

B vitamins and essential amino acids in eel help strengthen the immune system, reducing the risk of bacterial invasion at the surgical site — a crucial factor in maintaining a stable nose shape after rhinoplasty.

Prevents scarring and improves skin quality:

Vitamin A and E in eel promote collagen production and new cell formation, helping the skin on the nose remain smooth without darkening or pigmentation after the procedure.

Balances nutrients and restores overall health:

Apart from protein, eel contains healthy lipids and minerals such as calcium, potassium, and zinc — helping the body recover energy quickly after surgery and reducing fatigue.

Important notes when preparing and eating eel after rhinoplasty

  • Only consume eel 5–7 days after surgery, when the wound has begun closing and swelling has reduced significantly.
  • Choose fresh wild-caught eel; avoid farmed eel or stale eel to prevent toxin exposure.
  • Cook thoroughly — suitable dishes include eel porridge, eel stewed with herbs, or eel braised with turmeric.
  • Do not eat too much in one sitting; limit to 2–3 meals per week.
  • If you experience itching, rashes, or increased swelling or pain in the nose after eating eel, stop immediately and contact your doctor.

Although eel offers many benefits, your postoperative diet should always be personalized according to your individual condition.
